I baked a cake!
Hej gutter. happy Tuesday! has the universe ever sent you a gentle reminder that perhaps you should probably get back to doing what you love? I got one of those nudges to start baking again (it’s been months) because I made this kick-butt cake a few days ago… granted it was from a mix, but still!

Of course I had to share it with you… ?

It’s the Sprinkle party Snack Cake mix With Frosting by a brand called Baked. I picked it up randomly at cost plus world Market a few weeks ago because it was on sale and…I liked how the box looked!

I could whip up a cake from scratch, but eh, baking needs attention, precision and, well…heart. I haven’t had much leftover soul to invest in baking sweets lately, but then I found this cake mix. Not only did it make things easy, but the cake actually tastes homemade. højt anbefalet!

The mix includes a packet of dry components for a butter-based vanilla cake with rainbow sprinkles, and another packet for ordinary with vanilla frosting. The directions are pretty detailed, too, which makes it easy to not mess up.

Here’s the batter…
THIS CAKE IS SO GOOD. It’s light-as-air and melts in your mouth, and it doesn’t have that obvious taste of your typical boxed cake. hard to explain, but to me boxed cakes all taste the same — kinda oily and heavy, without much flavor. Anyway, this one’s really, really good, and so is the frosting.

If you happen to live near a world Market, I suggest grabbing a box!

Anywho, that lovely cake opened up a metaphorical baking door, so I’ve made even more goodies since then, including brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and marbled cookies, which are half chocolate chip and half dark chocolate.

Sorry, I’m getting distracted. before I lose my train of thought, I have one more world Market thing to show you — this box of dark chocolate sprinkles!

It’s from Holland and from a brand called DeRuijter (“masters of bread toppings”), and the picture on the front looks like a loaf of French bread cut in half with the dark chocolate sprinkles on top.

OK, so how does this work, exactly?
Can somebody please explain what’s going on here? Do you eat the bread with just the sprinkles on top, or do you toast the bread in an oven to melt the sprinkles? Or, are the sprinkles attached to the bread with Nutella or peanut butter or something? Or, do you just eat it ordinary like a dark chocolate sprinkle sandwich?

If someone from Holland could please explain just exactly how this works, please fill me in, because I don’t know what’s going on here, and I would love to, LOL!

Now, to ensure that this post is marginally related to beauty, I finished the packets of Hask Hair Masks I got a while back, so I popped into Ulta to grab some more and found out that they sell the Argan Oil version in a jar for six bucks!

Can I just say that I’m STOKED?! I’m kicking myself for not getting a second jar. Suk…

Also, I’m breaking in some fresh MAC eyeliners this week. They’re not really “new new,” since they’re new versions of old colors I’ve loved for a long time, but I’m still excited to use these sticks of Teddy, Costa Riche, Powersurge and Prunella!

AHHHH! allow me to fly my MAC freak flag for a second, because I can remember with shocking clarity the night I wore MAC Skew Lipstick, one of the seven lipsticks in the MAC Throwback collection, to my pal Cindy’s birthday party in 2002.

I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I remember wearing Skew 16 years ago with a blackened gray smoky eye (complete with glitter). I also remember touching it up underneath blue lights in a Castro dance club (and I may or may not have been a little tipsy) and thinking, “This is the best lipstick ever! This is the best night ever! I’m gonna dance like this forever!”

Like the other six lipsticks in MAC Throwback, Skew was cast aside!

OK, maybe that’s a little dramatic. It was “quietly retired.”

Well, now they’re back, at least temporarily.

I didn’t wear all seven of these colors way back when, but I remember seeing a lot of of them around, especially the dark mattes, Marrakesh and Rocker, which are/were very 1995.

I think the nude mattes, Shrimpton and Bronx, are completely new to me, but they look like something I would’ve layered under MAC Oyster girl in the early aughts.

And icon and Spanish Fly (both Frosts) look like colors I wore around 1997 with incredibly dark lip liner (which would have been left unblended, of course).

The mattes in the collection feel like the MAC formula felt back in the day. They seem thicker and heavier than the newer MAC mattes to me, and the finish looks flatter and a lot more stark.

Aaaand, they’re also just as drying as those older MAC mattes were, FYI. So keep your favorite lip balm at the ready.

Even though these seven shades had their moment, I think this is a terrific idea for a collection. If you’re thinking about getting just one, I say get hold of Skew, or at least take a look at it. I think it’ll look fab on a lot of skin tones. It’s coral, but it has a pink duochrome, so often it looks a lot more pink, depending on what you’re wearing on your eyes and cheeks.

Bonus: It’s only moderately pigmented, which indicates that you can touch it up without a mirror.

A few pretties from the Chanel cruise 2019 collection
Despite my obsession with The love boat as a child, I’ve never taken a cruise…because HELLO, CLAUSTROPHOBIA! but I might consider one if the destination were Chanel. The new Chanel cruise collection arrives in port next month, and judging by the pieces I wore today, Lucia Pica was going for a subtle look, as in sheer, luminous highlights on the high points of the face; soft, subtle contours on eyes and cheeks; a rosy brown lip; and a soft glossy glow on the lids.

Note: It is VERY, very sheer, which I don’t mind, because it makes the product easy to control.

It must suit lighter lasses and medium-toned mavens particularly well.

Also noteworthy: The bronzer doesn’t have warm orange tones, so it’s a straight-up brown. If I apply it too heavily, I look like I have dirty stripes on my face…which is why I think you’re forced to wear it sheer.

(Works terrific as an eyeshadow duo, too.)

ROUGE COCO FLASH IN HYDRATING lively shine LIP COLOUR IN CONTRASTE ($38): This silky, moisturizing rosy brown lipstick looks a tad frightening in the bullet, but I think it’s absolutely wearable, comfy and oh, so shiny.

The formula smells and tastes a little like roses, and the color lasts about two hours for me.

I’m low-key addicted to this formula… Can I haz all teh colors, plz?

OMBRE PREMIÈRE GLOSSTOP coat EYESHADOW IN LUNAIRE ($36): No glitter. just pure silvery gloss.

Wear time is quite limited at about an hour. This is lighter than a MAC eye gloss, but not as light as the NARS one, which, overall, I like better because it lasts longer.

LE VERNIS LONGWEAR nail COLOUR IN AFTERGLOW and PURPLE RAY ($28 EACH): Ooh! pastel nails! I like that these aren’t simply pink or peach pastels. Afterglow is a grayish beige with a subtle golden pearl, and Purple Ray is a lavender cream with a subtle gray undertone.

I’ll be taking these for a spin after my current Sally Hansen mani disappears (or I remove it, whichever comes first).

I’m wearing the bronzer/highlighter duos in Clair and medium on my eyes and cheeks. There’s also a touch of the silver eye gloss in the inner corners and the center of my lids. On my lips is Rouge Coco Flash in Contraste, and I’m also wearing blush in this pi (I felt naked without it!). It’s Chanel Joues Contraste in rose Bronze.

The best thing I’ve tried from the collection so far is Rouge Coco Flash, and it’s stunning and effortless! I think I just found my new everyday lipstick.

It’s pricey…but you can wear it down to the nub.

I also like the face duos, but they might be too sheer for some peeps, especially considering the $70 price. You really have to appreciate the subtlety of the look Chanel was going for in buy to “go there,” because there are similar products out there that will cost you a lot less.

There’s a new base in town.
I was perusing the list of ingredients for stay naked Hydromaniac tinted glow Hydrator, urban Decay’s latest foray into moisturizing foundations, and I started getting thirsty! It contains fermented black tea, also known as kombucha (which is such a great word, isn’t it?) and ginger extract (for skin brightening) — both which sound like the start of zesty afternoon drink that you’d pour over ice and squeeze a wedge of lemon into.

Urban Decay has a new hydrating, long-wearing base with a luminous finish called stay naked Hydromaniac tinted glow Hydrator. It has some pretty ingredients for brightening and moisturizing, like kombucha, marula and argan oil, and ginger extract. It comes in 12 shades that are $29 each (1.1 ounces), and you can grab it now on the urban Decay website.

Hydromaniac is urban Decay’s latest foray into skin-like bases, and it’s designed as a medium-coverage product to even out skin tone and freckles ever-so-slightly, although it can be layered for full coverage). The lightweight liquid foundation moisturizes with marula and argan oils while leaving a luminous, natural-looking finish behind.

I’m wearing 50 underneath my eyes, on my cheeks and in the center of my forehead. The lipstick is urban Decay Menace, and the blush/bronzer/highlighter is the urban Decay stay naked Threesome palette in Naked.

The luminosity isn’t “blinged out” to the extreme, so you don’t get a high-shine pearl, a la Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood flawless Filter. This is more like the subtlest sheen. It’s comparable to medium-coverage tinted moisturizers like Skin feels good by Lancôme and Ultra repair tinted moisturizer by first aid Beauty. If you like either of those, you’ll probably dig Hydromaniac too… Well, that is, if you can find a shade that matches your skin.

I’m STILL a MAC NC42 after all these years, and I’ve ended up with 50 medium Warm, which is a little bit too light for me to haphazardly blend all over my entire face, but I can wear it under my eyes, on my cheeks and down the center of my forehead, which is where I like the most coverage anyway. It has a minor highlighting effect on my face, too, which I like. I just have to really buff out the edges to prevent any obvious lines of demarcation where the product fades into my jawline and up into the the perimeter of my forehead.

A few more things of note…

Pore blurring: Hydromaniac has a minor blurring effect, which I think is lovely.

Long wearing: urban Decay calls it a “24HR” formula, and to remove it, I do need to do a double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser first, followed by CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser afterward.

No SPF: many similar lightweight foundations/tinted moisturizers contain SPF, but Hydromaniac does not.

Vegan formula: Yup, it’s vegan. ?

Bottom line, I like the interesting ingredients, and I appreciate that urban Decay is offering something for people who prefer less coverage than full. My skin still looks like my skin, and I love how I don’t feel it sitting on top of my face. It’s very comfortable! I’d say that there’s also a good amount of moisture, but I wouldn’t rely on this as my one-and-only face moisturizer.

The only thing is…I sure do wish there were more shades. If you can find one that works for you, I say go for it!
